State of California

Origin

Brightscape is a subsidiary of CENIC, a non-profit organization founded in 1997 to provide broadband access to academic and research institutions in California. CENIC operates an 8,000-mile fiber network with 20 million users, a research network for Western States, and an international peering facility that serves the US research community and their partners in the Asia Pacific region, Oceania, and North America.

In 2021, CENIC responded to the State of California and assembled a team to design and build the Middle Mile Broadband Initiative (MMBI), a $3.2B open access fiber network spanning the state that is currently under construction. While managing the MMBI build-out, Brightscape utilizes the team’s expertise to support other clients, including governments at all levels, companies, and communities, to define strategies, procure funding, and deliver services.

Pedigree

The assembled professionals are 30+ people from municipal governments, commercial telcos, and network operators with the breadth of knowledge and depth of skills necessary to connect communities.
